F & P Present: A Detroit Brunch Series

ABOUT
Hosted by Tom Culver + Renee Sandoval of Feast & Philos, the Detroit Brunch Series will unfold at the beautiful Salt and Cedar Studio located in the heart of Eastern Market @ 2448 Riopelle, Detroit.

The Brunch Series was originally assigned as a community based project to Wayne State University students Tom Culver + Renee Sandoval. It was through their passion for wholesome food, the arts and grassroots activism that has driven them to go beyond classroom expectations and bring something unique to Detroit's historic Eastern Market.

STATEMENT
Through artisanal food and conversation we connect Detroiters to the resources of Eastern Market. Artists, educators, farmers and merchants share insights into their work with emerging citizens. We use locally sourced ingredients and offer our guests the opportunity to engage creatively in community.

DESCRIPTION
Feast & Philos is a newly developed entity under the umbrella of Detroit based non-profit organization Market Studio Kitchen {marketstudio-emergentlab.org/} / Salt & Cedar Letterpress {saltandcedar.com/}.

Proposal // Detroit Brunch Series

Tom and I have been hard at work on the first menu for our Eastern Market sourced Detroit Brunch Series. We spent the afternoon in the kitchen cooking, baking, experimenting with the recipes we created while photographing the dishes along the way. The first dish photographed is technically a quiche due to our lack of skillet, but will eventually evolve into a frittata. Another setback we encountered was having to hold off on photographing the apple + onion crostini since our light source was natural and the sun was going down.

I'll be blogging about more of the details on here + my personal blog as soon as we get things a bit more together. Be sure to check back for information on how to purchase tickets via eventbrite as well! In the meantime, you can view draft one of our mission statement below.

Statement:

Through art, food and culture, our mission is to connect students and engaged citizens to the surrounding communities of Detroit. Creating a farm to table environment with food sourced from the Eastern Market, participants will indulge in a locally sourced artisanal brunch and engage in an open discussion lead by local artists, merchants and farmers.

Detroit // Recycles Here!

My friend Tom quickly hand rendered a comprehensive guide to help motivate his roommates to become better recyclers, and to be more conscious of what can be recycled in the first place. I took his sketch and challenged myself to turned it into something a bit more visually appealing with the help of Adobe InDesign.

If you're living in the Detroit area and not quite sure about recycling, do your part and start by checking out their website >> Recycle Here!

Letterpress Workshop // Prove Your Love

My friend Tom and I are both currently interning at Salt and Cedar letterpress, and today we helped prep for the Valentine workshop event, Prove Your Love. After fresh cups of Great Lakes coffee, both he and I got to work by setting up a variety of paper goods for the class.

To start the morning off, Megan O'Connell lead the group by explaining the letterpress and movable type printing process via hands-on demonstration. Each couple then had the opportunity to create their own customized valentine notes. Everyone was encouraged to take sporadic breaks to indulge in fresh sliced baguettes spread with a triple-cream brie, and topped with choice of raspberry jam, raw honey, salami and/or a balsamic vinegar. The students were really wonderful, and great times were had!
